The next 2 days will be out of Havana, travelling per jeep through the Pinar del Rio province, west of Havana. You will be touring the green area of the Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site dotted with tobacco fields and surrounded by rugged mountains, called ‘mogotes.’ This is where the finest Cuban cigars are produced, and you will surely get a chance to sample them.
Pick up is at 08:00AM by your driver/guide. Sit back and relax as the urban panorama gradually changes into a pastoral landscape with farms and tobacco drying barns.
★ In Pinar del Rio City, approximately 2 hours’ drive from Havana, you will visit a tobacco factory; built in the 19th century as a hospital, Francisco Donatién is now a ‘Fábrica de Tabaco’, whose employees manufacture each between 60 and 110 of the world´s best cigars per day.
★ You will also visit a traditional tobacco farm, the property of the ‘Godfather of Cuban tobacco’, the late Alejandro Robaina. After the revolution, he convinced the Cuban government that his plantation had to remain a family business - the way it had been since 1845 - rather than a state cooperative. The quality of the leaves harvested at his plantation is considered one of the best worldwide and his production became a global brand; ‘Vegas Robaina’. Alejandro died in 2010, at the age of 91, after securing the family business to his grandson.
★ Lunch will be served in the oldest house in Viñales, nowadays a restaurant with a lush garden.
★ The afternoon is at leisure; you can take a walk in the beautiful valley or opt for a horseback ride.
★ Dinner will be in a rustic ecological farm run by a family. This country restaurant offers beautiful views, rich and varied dishes, complemented with fresh organic fruits and vegetables.
★ Overnight in the Viñales region in a small, quaint Cuban-style B&B. Rustic charm at its best.
