Day 2: Havana – Exploring the city in a vintage car

Morning program:
★ Breakfast.
★ At 09:30AM, our concierge representative will meet you at your accommodation for a briefing.
★ At 10:00AM, start of the city program.
★ You will step into a vintage car, driven by your private driver, to explore Havana and cover all important landmarks.
★ Explore historical La Habana Vieja, a part of town founded in the 16th century, on a guided walk. Have exchanges with the locals in what is nowadays like an incredible open-air museum of architecture, art and culture. Learn more about the history of the area while strolling along the narrow colonial streets and interacting with the Cubans. There are many private enterprises, and you will see how the new Cuba is gradually being shaped.
★ Lunch. Your table is booked at a paladar. Lunch is on your own. You can pay the restaurant directly in CUC.

Afternoon program:
You will visit a workshop where battered 50’s cars are lovingly restored into glamorous automobiles that each have a name; Madonna reputedly was carried away by “Nadine.” This is a family-run business that grew out of a passion for vintage cars. It is a typical example of cuentapropista (entrepreneurship) and offers visitors an opportunity to see examples of successful local enterprise in Cuba. Private enterprise is allowed in Cuba within limits. Learn more about this while the owner of this company, once a taxi driver, tells you his story.

For the evening, there are many options. Our recommendation:
★ Visit the cultural project Fábrica del Arte Cubano (Thursday – Sunday, from 08:00PM).
For a fantastic opportunity to learn more about contemporary Cuban art and culture and really interact with local cultural figures, visit the cultural project Fábrica del Arte Cubano (FAC), the Cuban Art Factory. Founded in 2014, it serves to promote the work of some of Cuba’s unknown, albeit rising, modern artists, painters, photographers, musicians, and playwrights. The project is the brainchild of internationally renowned Cuban musician, X Alfonso, whose collaborative multimedia works with other artists sparked his desire to open a local arts space. The Cuban Art Factory hosts several galleries and performance spaces, and you will be able to enjoy exhibitions, live music, and performances by Cuba’s emerging artists, who all address social and cultural topics in their works. Insider tip: combine this visit with dinner at the privately owned restaurant, El Cocinero, next door.

Day 3: Havana - Hemingway's Tale & Trail

★ Breakfast.
★ At 09:30AM, start of the Hemingway’s Tale & Trail program.
Delve into literary history by visiting Ernest Hemingway’s house. The writer lived in Cuba on and off for 20 years, and his Finca Vigia is where he wrote some of his most famous novels.
The tour includes plenty of opportunities to both learn about Cuba’s history and engage with today’s Cuba.
★ Visit the Finca Vigia where Hemingway wrote his famous novel, The Old Man and the Sea, and other works. The interior has remained intact, as if Ernest had just left the house for a break in between writing.
★ Explore Cojimar, the sleepy seaside village that served as inspiration and setting for The Old Man and the Sea. Meet today’s fishermen.  See how the locals now live, on a walking tour, which also takes you to Hemingway’s statue, made from old anchors and tools collected by local fishermen. You will also be treated to a cocktail in the restaurant, Las Terrazas, the preferred hangout of the author.
★ Visit Hotel Ambos Mundos in Havana. You may peek inside room 511, where Hemingway used to stay in the 1930s.
★ Visit the restaurant-bars where Hemingway used to enjoy his favourite drinks, “My mojito in la Bodeguita del Medio and my daiquiri in the Floridita.”
★ After the Hemingway’s Tale & Trail program, the literary theme continues, as you visit Havana’s first genuine antique bookstore, run by a young entrepreneur. Be welcomed in this shop. There is a wonderful selection of old artefacts. Delve into gathered piles where you may find rare collectibles including old coins, postcards, posters, magazines and art deco signs from the 1930s.

Meals included: Breakfast

Note: Lunch during the Hemingway tour is on your own, at a restaurant and location of your own choice in Cojimar or in Havana Old City. You can pay the restaurant directly in CUC.

Day 4: Havana – Art, Culture and Community Project Las Terrazas

Art and nature are on the full day itinerary as the chauffeur/guide drives you in a jeep around Havana and to Las Terrazas, where you can meet the local artists that have made this former peasant village their home. Located 50 miles west of Havana, Las Terrazas was built in the 1970s around the beautiful lake, Lago San Juan. As well as home to many artists‘ studios, it is now a famous eco-community project.
★ Breakfast.
★ Ride along the bustling Malecón, Havana’s famous boulevard. The quay wall accommodates todo Havana, from fishermen to amorous couples, musicians and entire families. This is indeed, Havana’s outdoor living room, where you can meet with the locals.
★ Immerse in local culture at Fusterlandia, where you can get to know the colourful works of Cuban artist, José Rodriguez Fuster, who has been referred to as the Picasso of the Caribbean. Fuster not only turned his house, but the whole neighbourhood into a live museum. The messages are not only visual, they are also educational. Coming into the town of Jaimanitas and entering the house of Fuster may be a challenge for eyes not used to seeing beyond the apparent. Fusterlandia is a place which allows the dreamer to imagine things beyond what this planet allows him to see.
★ Explore eco-village Las Terrazas, where you can meet the local artists and taste the area’s excellent coffee at the charming hacienda, Buenavista, dating from the 19th century. The area is part of a mass reforestation project that was launched by the Cuban government in 1968. It aims to provide sustainable economic development using natural resources. You will learn about the insights of this project at the visitors center.
★ Get to know Cuban folk culture at the memorabilia-filled house – now a museum – of the late Polo Montañez, one of Cuba’s most popular folk singers. Montañez was a simple farmer, a Guajiro Natural, which is also the title of his most famous song. Though famous in Cuba, he always stayed true to his farmer’s roots.
